Policy Provisions
1. Residency Requirement

Cumberland University requires freshmen students to live in Cumberland University residence halls unless they receive documented exemption from the Office of Residence Life. Supporting documentation will be required to aide in the student’s request. Students may petition for a waiver from this requirement based upon the caveats outlined below.

For the purposes of housing, a freshman shall be defined as any first time entering freshman student attempting nine (9) credit hours or more, any freshman with college experience (advanced placement, dual credit, etc.), and/or any transfer student with less than 30 hours earned.

A student may petition for a waiver for one of the following caveats:
• The student is 23 years of age, requiring a copy of federal/state identification with date of birth
• The student is married, requiring a copy of marriage certificate
• The student has children or is with child, requiring a copy of birth certificate or sonogram photo
• The student is living with parent/guardian/immediate family member within thirty (30) driving miles from the school, requiring a signed letter from the family member/guardian giving the physical address, daytime phone number, and nighttime phone number for the family member/guardian

In the event a student requests to live off campus for other reasons than those listed above, the student may petition for a waiver. The waiver is reviewed by a committee and a determination made whether to grant the petition or not.

Each student certifies that the information given on their waiver and/or on any supporting documents is valid and current. If at any point this information becomes invalid, the student will notify the Office of Residence Life and their off-campus status will be reviewed. The student also understands if they receive a waiver to live with a parent, guardian, and/or an immediate family member and they are am found to be residing at an unapproved location, they will be charged the cost of a double room and meal plan for the semester in which they received the waiver and any subsequent semesters until their exemption status can be validated.

2. Family Housing

Cumberland University offers accommodations on campus for single undergraduate and graduate students of any age; but family housing options are restricted to graduate-level or full-time residence life staff serving as residence life coordinator. Residence halls range in style from historic to modern and range in size from small to large. Also, several halls have academic or featured communities for those looking to broaden their horizons. However, the current residence halls on campus are not constructed for family housing.
