NUR 460 Advanced Topics in Nursing
The course provides a theoretical basis and clinical experience for the practice of holistic nursing for adult patients with critical illness in acute care settings from varying cultural backgrounds. Emphasis is on applying the nursing process in order to restore the client to the highest level of health possible. Students will use the nursing process and critical thinking skills to learn to perform comprehensive assessments, plan and provide care, and to evaluate outcomes of nursing actions. Critical care topics will cover specific and representative problems requiring heroic interventions to maintain life. Legal, ethical, and economic issues arising in acute and critical care practice settings are continuously explored throughout the course. Professional development of the nurse is refined in the areas of responsibility, accountability, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary health care team. Clinical practicum allows students to practice more independently in a preceptor environment. Concepts of leadership, management and evidence based practice are integrated into clinical practice and uniquely applied to the critical care setting. Three classroom hours and four clinical credit hours per week. Fees: $245.00 testing fee and $50.00 laboratory fee. Course will expire after teach-out based on new 2020-2021 curriculum change, expected last offering Fall 2021.
