A program is defined as an academic area of concentration for which a degree is granted, equivalent to a “major.” Every program shall be led by a full time faculty member with an earned degree in a field directly or closely related to the academic content of the program.
Program Directors report to the School Dean.
General expectations and responsibilities: Program Directors are responsible for maintaining the currency, integrity, and quality under the supervision of the School Dean for all academic programs over which they have jurisdiction. Program Directors are expected to communicate with and lead the program faculty in all aspects of academic program maintenance. This is to be achieved primarily through assessment of program data, effective communication with program faculty, and planning and delivery of an achievable schedule of courses and other quality educational experiences for students.
The university's expectation for Program Directors' leadership is to deliver continuous improvement of their program(s) within the context of available institutional support and priority.
Within the parameters above the following are specific responsibilities of the PD:
A Program Director:
- guides the development and implementation of appropriate assessment measures and action plans to increase student learning and program improvement and organizes, maintains and reports program assessment data to responsible parties within the school and for courses in the university General Education Curriculum to the Director of the GEC;
- meets and communicates with all program faculty (including adjuncts as available) on a regular basis to maximize the quality and function of the program (this should include the sharing of assessment data, new ideas, and current best practices);
- facilitates opportunities for all program faculty to contribute to the betterment of the program(s) and is the responsible body for submitting this to the dean;
- periodically organizes and reports on peer reviews of programs on a schedule maintained by the dean;
- establishes goals for program(s) with faculty;
- guides any change in program curriculum resulting from the above process;
- recommends to the dean qualified adjunct or part-time faculty for courses as needed; and coordinates on a regular basis with faculty involved in the program.
