Policy Provisions
1. Greek Council, Panhellenic Council, and National Pan-Hellenic Council
All Greek organizations must maintain membership in the Cumberland University Greek Council. Female organizations that are members of the National Panhellenic Conference must also maintain membership in the Cumberland University Panhellenic Council. Panhellenic chapters should refer to the Panhellenic Unanimous Agreements and Cumberland Panhellenic Bylaws for additional regulations. Organizations that are nationally part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council are required to maintain membership in the Cumberland University NPHC.
The Greek Council is the deliberative and legislative body of Cumberland’s Greek system, meaning that concerns related to Greek Life, in general, at the University should be brought to this organization and discussed with its representatives. The Council may discuss and express its views about any matter affecting the University’s Greek System. The Greek Council is the appropriate forum for the discussion and recommendation by Greek Organizations about any University policies or practices affecting fraternities and sororities at CU.
Council recommendations shall be forwarded to the Director of Greek Affairs for approval, implementation, or rejection. If the Director of Greek Affairs rejects an item, the Council may appeal the denouncement to the Dean of Students and they may ultimately appeal to the University Provost. The Greek Council will be composed of one member from each recognized organization. Chapters will vote and elect their representative during their election period. Presidents of chapters may not serve on Greek Council.
Positions include:
●President - The President will oversee the functions of Greek Council, including leading all meetings.
●Secretary/Treasurer - This position can be split into two positions if the need arises. The secretary will keep minutes of all chapter meetings, including attendance and the overall greek calendar. The treasurer will be in charge of overseeing fundraising and management of all greek budget.
●Annual Events Chair - This position will focus on planning and mediating all annual greek events on campus, including halloween, greeksgiving, greek formal, and greek week.
●Philanthropy Chair - This position will ensure all chapters are actively having events that tie into the philanthropies of the organizations. This includes accountability and planning all greek events.
●Social Chair - This position will keep track of social events happening within each organization.
●Academic Chair - This position will make sure chapters have submitted their academic plan for each semester and work with chapters to schedule study halls and tutoring as needed.
●CU Community Events Chair - This position will communicate with chapters CU events that are held where organizations can interact with the community at large.
●CU Campus Events Chair - This position will communicate with chapters CU events taking place on campus for the benefit of the student body, including athletics.
Chapter delegate can appoint a replacement delegate to the Council if he/she is not able to attend, but no more than two (2) members of each chapter should be present at each meeting. During balloting/voting for recommendations, each chapter shall have only a single vote. All members of the Council are allowed a voice in discussions. The Council will meet at least bi-weekly to discuss Greek standards and behavior and to organize events that promote positive Greek relations. Other meetings may be organized as deemed necessary by the Director of Greek Affairs or other University officials.
