Policy Provisions
1. Adjunct Faculty Policies

Cumberland University adjunct faculty are subject to and benefit from the same policies as full-time faculty as outlined in university policies unless specified below.

1.1 Adjunct Faculty Duties and Responsibilities

Adjunct faculty will not be assigned student advisees.

Adjunct faculty will not be expected to serve on university committees.

Adjunct faculty are not eligible for rank or promotion.

Adjunct faculty may not be provided with office space, a university phone, or university computer. Requests may be made to the responsible school dean but will be subject to availability, with preference given to full-time faculty.

  • Adjunct faculty are not required to submit annual evaluation documents; evaluation of performance will be the duty of the program director or most immediate full-time supervisor if they teach coursework independent of a program of study.
  • Adjunct faculty are expected to be accessible to students for course-related inquiries and requests for help. This may take the form of on-campus meetings, telephone calls, video-conferencing, or other appropriate means of communication.
  • Adjunct faculty are expected to use their Cumberland University email address and to be responsive to student contacts within 48 hours.
  • Adjunct faculty are welcome at any school or university event and are encouraged to attend if possible. 
  • Adjunct faculty are not guaranteed continued employment and may not be given a reason if the university does not offer continued employment.

1.2 Failure to Comply with Faculty Duties and/or University Policies

Failure to comply with the duties and responsibilities specified in this university policy, other applicable university policies, or administrative decisions may result in revision of responsibilities, non-renewal of appointment, immediate dismissal, or other disciplinary action by the school dean and/or the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

1.3 Adjunct Faculty Work Loads

1.3.1. Adjunct faculty will not be assigned teaching responsibility exceeding nine credit hours per semester, or 29 clock-hours per week (average) of responsibility.

1.3.1.a School of Nursing Adjunct pay for teaching labs and clinicals is based on contact hours using the following formula: 500 hours = 9 Credits (55.55 hours = 1 credit)

1.3.2. Adjunct instructional workloads will be calculated at the rate of three clock hours for each credit hour. Courses not taught two days a week for 3 credit hours may have clock-hour calulations, and may be compensated differently. This information is located in the Office of Academic Affairs.

1.3.3  Adjunct faculty will be limited to a maximum of nine credit hours of instruction per semester.
