Blood Borne Pathogen Education
Through the normal course of providing athletic training services, staff and athletic training students may come in contact with bodily fluids which may pose a risk for infection from blood borne diseases. These diseases may include hepatitis B, HIV, or other blood borne pathogens. It is essential that the staff and athletic training students utilize the following techniques and principles to minimize the risk of pathogen transmission: ● Treat all bodily fluids as infectious ● Use disposable latex gloves when treating a student-athlete who is bleeding or has breaks in the skin allowing the discharge of bodily fluids ● Wash hands before and after every treatment. ● Use protective devices during procedures where bodily fluids are likely to be splashed ● Use resuscitation masks during CPR and Rescue Breathing ● Dispose of all contaminated waste in approved biohazard containers ● Biohazard containers will be disposed of by incineration by a licensed outside agency ● Use of a fresh 1:10 bleach solution or other OSHA approved cleaners for cleaning all bodily fluid spills.
